An Evening at Blair Castle: Whisky, History and the Spirit of Atholl

Step through the doors of Blair Castle into eight centuries of Highland history — and into a story told only to you.

This is Blair Castle as few ever experience it: closed to the public, opened exclusively for your group of up to ten guests. Your private tour is led by a guide steeped in the history of the castle and its families, walking you through state rooms that have welcomed monarchs and rebels alike. The focus falls on the turbulent 18th century — the Jacobite risings of 1689, 1715 and 1745, when the Atholl family found itself divided across loyalties, and when Blair Castle earned its place in history as the last castle in the British Isles to be besieged. Here, among portraits and tapestries that witnessed it all, the past feels remarkably close at hand.

From the very same period comes a quieter Highland tradition: the making of whisky. Across the glens and burns of Atholl, distillers — some licensed, many not — shaped a craft that endures today in the spirits of the surrounding hills. Retiring to the castle library, you’ll be welcomed to a private tasting of four whiskies with deep roots in this landscape: Blair Athol, distilled three miles from where you sit; Glenturret, Scotland’s oldest working distillery, at Crieff; Tullibardine of Blackford; and the elegant Balvenie of Speyside. Each is poured with its story — of place, of people, and of the estate’s long entanglement with the water of life.

The evening closes in the company of our castle chef, who brings to your table, tastes drawn directly from the Atholl archives — recipes prepared and served at Blair Castle in the 18th century, recreated here from the original household papers. Each course is offered as a tasting, paired thoughtfully with what remains in your glass, so that the flavours of the period — game, smoked fish, heather honey, warming spice — meet the whiskies that grew up alongside them.

For one evening, Blair Castle is yours to travel back in taste and time.
