Atholl Estates is an exceptional destination offering a mix of high quality and authentic visitor experiences that include Blair Castle and Gardens and a range of outdoor activities, all amid spectacular scenery and a variety of accommodation options. Our 2019 Forward Plan illustrates the range of our enterprises and our immediate plans for them.

We typically attract 145,000 paying visitors and over 70,000-bed night guests each year. The castle and gardens are five-star graded by Visit Scotland and a popular venue for weddings and private functions. The caravan park is four-star graded and currently recognized by the AA as its premier accredited park in Scotland.

Atholl is an exceptional place, offering a mix of high quality and authentic visitor experiences that include Blair Castle and Gardens, a thriving holiday park, large crowd events and a range of idyllic self-catered accommodation, all amid spectacular scenery and a dynamic working estate.

The estate has so much to share, being an ideal base for walking, cycling and cultural or nature-based sightseeing and we see great potential to make Atholl ever more popular as a destination for rural breaks.

After a period of consolidation within our tourism enterprise due to the Covid pandemic, we are now preparing to take advantage of the recovery. Markets and capacity within the sector have changed creating challenges and opportunities. We are looking for an enterprising and enthusiastic individual to join our senior management team to provide the experience and time required to ensure tourism on Atholl levers full advantage from post-pandemic demand for experience, leisure and hospitality.

The right candidate will have an established track record in previous roles of applying initiative and market knowledge to the development of innovative and successful business decisions. They will also be able to demonstrate an ability and appetite to run the diverse range of venues and events we offer on Atholl ranging between a Grade A listed historic house exhibition, large crowd events within the grounds, a large family holiday park and a growing number of self-catered cottages and lodges.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the role leads teams of up to 60 staff who include competent managers and supervisors. The estate supports its senior management team with central services in the areas of strategic development, finance, property maintenance, marketing, sales, health and safety, HR, information technology and legal services.

The Role

More specifically the Head of Tourism is responsible for:

  • Setting, monitoring and achieving objectives and key results including sales targets, in collaboration with peers in sales and marketing, that meet or exceed budgetary financial commitments.
  • Being vigilant to opportunities for upselling and cross-selling within and between venues.
  • Continually striving to improve cost control and tight supplier contract administration.
  • Routinely benchmarking performance against competitor analysis.
  • Effective recruitment of staff, their induction and investment in training.
  • Nurturing the physical and emotional well being of staff, ensuring equipment and training support tasks and building in operational resilience to reduce occasions when staff are obliged to stretch to cover unplanned change.
  • Working with sales and marketing to ensure all guests and visitors have the opportunity to feedback their views on our service and that information is employed to best use.
  • The effective delivery of excellent customer service and quality standards across our sites and properties that meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Acting as team leader when working on projects with peers in marketing and sales.
  • Employing best use of information technology to enhance the visitor and guest experience, improve customer service and increase sales, taking a leading role in the operation of EPOS and online sales systems.
  • Promoting our brand identity and consistency in all standards of presentation.
  • Stepping in and resolving operational problems when required.
  • Reporting and liaising effectively with clients, directors and the senior management team.
  • Ensuring the company’s health and safety policy is being adhered to at all levels and taking responsibility for the reasonable safety and wellbeing of our visitors and guests.

Role Requirements

Core skills and attributes

  • At least five years relevant experience at a managerial level
  • A can-do and resilient attitude to problem-solving
  • Organised and efficient
  • Comfortable with IT, proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Discrete and responsible with private or confidential information
  • Cheerful and co-supportive with peers and staff
  • Ability to be mainly office based although some flexibility for home working is recognised


The position will offer an attractive remuneration package and the opportunity to live and work in one of the most scenic regions of Scotland. Details of the package will be discussed with shortlisted candidates. Rental housing on the estate is also available as an option.

2 x Park Wardens – full time with accommodation

We have a fantastic opportunity to join our award-winning caravan park warden team 1 x Full time and 1 x 13 month fixed term contract with the chance of extension. Both positions come with accommodation if needed. A varied and exciting role, being one of the main points of contact for all our guests in the park.

– Provision of excellent customer service

A clean driving license is essential.

You will be part of a friendly and close working team on the park and also the wider estate. This is a full-time role, working 5 days out of 7 during our open season. In addition to a competitive remuneration package, the estate promotes the development of skills within its workforce and you will have the opportunity to participate in training, both as part of the job but also to develop your career.
